Hanoi to Bangkok

15 days in Vietnam, Laos & Thailand.

Explore the diversity of Indochina from north to south on this fantastic two week adventure.

15 days Hanoi to Bangkok or vice versa

This classic overland journey from Hanoi to Bangkok is firmly entrenched as one of our most popular and interesting trips. Travel through scenic ‘frontier’ country to cross from Vietnam into Laos, explore the quiet city of Vientiane, soak up the atmosphere in World Heritage listed Luang Prabang and cruise up the Mekong River on a slow-boat to Thailand.

Itinerary:

Days 1-2 Hanoi is a beautiful city of tree-lined streets and French architecture — arrive early and get out to mingle with the locals or grab a map and take a walking tour of the Old Quarter.

In the evening of Day 2 we head out to see a famous Water Puppets performance.

Days 3-4 Travel south past spectacular scenery to the port city of Vinh, a convenient stopover on our way through to Laos. After entering Laos we spend a night as the guests of a local family near Hinboun. Life here revolves around crops and livestock, so expect an early wake up call.

Days 5-6 Quiet and easy going, Vientiane is a most unlikely capital city. You soon get used to the laid-back lifestyle, but make the effort to hire a bike and get out and discover some of the many cultural delights.

Days 7-9 A short flight takes us over the mountains to the peaceful and very special town of Luang Prabang, full of beautiful temples and friendly people. We visit the Royal Palace Museum and the spectacular Kuang Si waterfalls. Rise early to watch monks on their morning alms round.

Days 10-11 Our relaxing two day journey takes us up the swirling, turbid Mekong waters on a local river boat. We visit the Pak Ou caves lined with thousands of Buddha images and spend the night in the small village of Pak Beng before finally crossing the border into Thailand at Chiang Khong.

Days 12-13 With its many temples, fantastic night markets and some of the worlds best food stalls, it is no wonder that Chiang Mai is a favourite with G.A.P travellers. On the evening of Day 13 we board a comfortable sleeper train for Bangkok.

Days 14-15 After a longtail boat tour of Bangkok’s lively old klongs, we visit the magnificent reclining Buddha at Wat Po.

Day 15 End of trip.
